Hydrogeology and Landscapes of the Grand Valley, Western Colorado USA – October 15, 2026 1- 6pm

Field Trip Organizer: Dr. Greg Baker, Professor of Geology at Colorado Mesa University, whose 30+ years of expertise focuses on geophysics and drone technology applications to groundwater and other near-surface geological applications.

Field Trip Objectives: Introduce unique aspects of water resources in the mid-latitude steppe (BSk) climate zone of the Grand Valley of Colorado and experience several distinctive geological landscapes in the region.

Highlights: This field trip will navigate the spectacular Unaweep Canyon of the Uncompahgre Uplift, discussing baseflow inputs to underfit streams and groundwater controls on critical habitat such as the Unaweep Seep.  Then, depending on weather conditions and related logistics the trip with either (a) traverse up prominent Grand Mesa ("worlds largest flat-top mountain") to an elevation above 10,000 MSL and consider groundwater contributions to water resources in the region, or (b) explore the geology of Colorado National Monument (established in 1911) with spectacular outcrop of many aquifer units of the region, in addition to its famous bedrock spires and exposure of the Great Unconformity, representing a nearly 2-billion year gap in the rock record.  The trip will conclude for a relaxing evening of dinner and wine tasting at the Peachfork Orchards and Vineyard.

Only 15 Field Trip Spots Remain.
